How do people in weaker countries react to Americans?

Reading an interesting book on the Chinese Civil War originally published in 1950, only one year after the end of the war. It has been described to me as one of the best books ever written about China. There is an interesting quote towards the beginning from the time of the Japanese occupation when China was being bombed a lot by Japan. “It often struck me that in coming from America to China I had traveled further than from a country at peace to one at war. I had come from an active, self contained land, confident that its fluid future was to be shaped by its own competence and strength, into a country where every man who knew anything about politics was conscious that his nation was at the mercy of outside forces.” Very very important comment to learn more about people, not just in China, who feel weak compared to the US or other powerful countries.
