US worst in developed world in Coronavirus response
I was just thinking last night about, beyond the tragedy of deaths and illnesses, what a humiliation the Coronavirus has been for the United States. We are the laughing stock of the world in terms of our awful response. A mixture of terrible leadership, a concept of freedom that does not include responsibility to others, mistrust of science and expertise, and higher tolerance for carnage in our gun culture, have produced this catastrophe. Then I got up this morning and see that Michelle Goldberg has a column in The New York Times today on exactly this topic. Italy’s Coronavirus situation was once considered a worst case scenario, now our per capita cases are in line with Italy’s very worst days. Again aside from the human tragedy here, this is completely eviscerating America’s role and soft power in the world. We will suffer from this for a very very long time. I am heartbroken.
